Since we had windows, I looked around online for inspiration. I did not make blueprints or use a plan to construct the house. Instead, we had to work with the dimensions of the windows.

The good news is that greenhouses are extremely easy to build, so as long as you can lay out a flat surface on which to install your windows, it should be simple enough!

After you have a design in mind, it is time for the hard work! Old windows are perfect for a DIY greenhouse; they’re not expensive, already insulated, and fairly simple to work with.

If you need to find windows, there are several places to look. First, check out the Facebook marketplace. The prices vary, and free is best if you can get lucky!

You can build shelves inside like we did. We also found an old baker’s rack to use inside. For more seed starting space, I purchased these easy-to-assemble shelving units off Amazon. They are inexpensive and adjustable. – Tara

We just went for it without any plans or measurements! This was not my style, but it was fun to throw caution to the wind for once and see what we could do.

We laid all the windows out for each side and cut from there. We honestly had no expectations for how this would pan out. Otherwise, we would have put in a more permanent foundation.

This foundation was created by burying a few reclaimed concrete blocks and leveling them.

Our Greenhouse: 3-year update!!!

The greenhouse has had no issues at all with our simple foundation. It has weathered well in our high winds and the occasional hurricane! We lost one roof panel during the last winter storm but found it and put it back in place.

I opted not to have a floor but used pavers instead. There is a breezeway at the bottom, with openings at the roof for great ventilation.

You might consider a concrete or wood foundation as well.

When your greenhouse frame is complete, it’s time to install your windows and door. Depending on what type of greenhouse you’ve chosen, you’ll have different options for installing your windows and doors.

We decided to keep the height of the greenhouse at 8ft so there would be fewer cuts to make. Using the 8ft 2×4 pine boards, we began by framing one wall with our largest window. That determined the width of the rest of the house. Then, we added more windows to fill in the spaces.

Unless you remember how to calculate the area of a triangle, I recommend finding a good roofing calculator online.

It definitely simplifies the process! I wanted the roof to be no taller than 2 feet to reach it to install the panels, so I created a brace for the beam supports with 2- 2x4s cut a little taller.

Additionally, this made it easy for my husband to install the beam that supports the rafters independently.

The most common choice for greenhouse roofs is corrugated plastic sheeting. This can make an attractive and functional structure and is not too expensive.

One way to reduce cost without sacrificing function is to recycle old windows for your greenhouse roof. As long as they are in good shape and aren’t too large, you can use old windows instead of sheets of glass at little additional cost.

Polycarbonate panels can provide walls and a long-lasting greenhouse roof, whether you’re aiming for durability, energy efficiency, or a sleek design.

I highly recommend another material like the double-walled plastic panels we used.
